Although this is an abridged arrangement of Capriccio Italien, the main themes of the work are all present, the development is adequate, and the spirit of the work is intact. The important parts for instruments which might be scare in some bands are all cross-cued. The scoring is such that a fine band could play the work with almost the original colors, or a less mature or smaller band could also play the work quite successfully by judiciously assigning cues. Some of the most difficult passages on the original score are simplified. For the ideas on the performance of this work, in regards to panache and control, the publisher recommends the recording done by the New York Philharmonic with Leonard Bernstein conducting. It is on the Columbia label MS-6258. Bernstein has the contro even though he lets the music go all out. We could also recommend a more controlled, slightly less dramatic, yet still a telling performance by the RCA Symphony with Kondrashin conducting.
