Variations from the Northern Sea was commissioned by the Ominato Band of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and premiered on June 10, 1991, under the direction of Akio Shimizu. Ito has often chosen Japanese traditional music as materials of his compositions, and this piece is one of works based on such an idea. The theme of variations is the Japanese folk song, Soran-bushi, sung in Hokkaido, a northern island in Japan. Soran-bushi is so familiar with Japanese people that many Japanese composers have been inspired by this song. Unlike any typical variations, this piece directly begins the first variation without the exposition of the theme, and the theme appears at just before the ending with strong percussion ensemble imitating taiko drums.
