The work opens with timpani and solo flute, emoting a rather pastoral mood to portray the peaceful nature of these people. The faster section is meant to describe the strife between the tribes and the encroaching settlers, building to a climax when federal troops brough in by the U.S.Cavalry to finally defeat the tribes. The last scene of the work describes a agony of the journey. It includes the recitation by the band members of a mournful Cherokee poem: Let us mourn those who have died Let us mourn those who are dying Let us mourn those who must endure The final portion of Trail of Tears ultimately envolves into a triumphal statement, intended to portray the ultimate victory of these Native Americans, who, in spite of this tragic event, have survived and prospered, remaining strong and proud peoples to this day.
