One of America's most popular authors, Jack London (1876-1916) drew inspiration from out of the Far North for his robust tales of perilous adventure and the brute force of nature. London wrote the short story To Build a Fire in 1907 at pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Set in the Yukon, which London himself visited during the winter of 1897, the story concerns man's conflict with nature. An unamed gold miner, accompanied by a dog - a big native Husky - nearly survives a day-long journey in the 75 below zero cold, but is ultimately betrayed by human ineptness. This first-known musical setting of To Build a Fire was skteched, composed and orchestrated during an eight month period june 1990 - January 1991.
Commissioned by the United States Army Band and dedicated to Conductor Emeritus Colonel Eugene W. Allen. To Build a Fireis a freely composed 17-minute quasi-tone poem - a general impression of the Jack London short story.
