In 1940 Khatchaturian got inspired by Maskarad, a ply by the nineteenth century Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841), who lived as a youg officer for the Tsar in Saint Petersburg. Lermontov loved freedom en was skeptical about tsarist society. In his play Maskarad (masquerade) he displays his critism of aristocrat life in the Russian Capital and the tragic effect of high society on the marriage of Albenin, who is fasely jealous of his wife Nina and poisons her. Lermontov's sharp pen was feared, even as he was banned to the Caucasus. When he got provoked to a duel he died, and the entire population of the city gathered at his funeral. The nineteenth century critic of the Tsar and the aristocraty obviously appealed to the Soviet sentiments in the young socialist republic. From the forteen pieces Khachaturian wrote as incidental music to Lermontov's Masquerade when it got staged in 1941, three have been arranged for Symphonic Wind Orchestra. In a Waltz, a Mazurka and a Galop the composer gives a glittering picture of social life among the aristocrats, a contrast to the underlying reality.
