Franz von Blon (1861-1945) considered the march from more of a concert composition in miniature than a piece of music used to help keep soldiers in step and less frustrated while marching from one location to another. Along with Carl Teike and Hermann Blankenburg, he is considered by many band enthusiasts as one of the most famous composer. The title of this march was adopted due to Blon's use of the melody The Watch on the Rhine in the last strain. The famous patriotic tune was written by Carl Wilhelm in 1854.
