The march begins with a short fanfare quoting The General's March. The first and second strains were composed to represent the esprit de Corps of the Cavalry. The trio begins with an introduction using material from the old song The Girl I Left Behind Me. The theme of the trio was inspired by bugle calls; the snare drum solo on the rim of the drum foreshadows the woodwind obbligato featured later in the grandioso rendition of the trio. During the break-up section, note the bass drum solo, which answers the Cavalry's call to "draw" sabres. The woodwinds are featured during the first hearing of the grandioso strain, and the full band fortissimo represents the final gallop to the end.
