A Tameside Overture is yet more proof of Philip Sparke's ability to contribute serious band literature which also has definite audience appeal. A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. This is developed - with the occasional change of meter to refresh the ear - before the fanfare returns, cleverly counterpointed against the music from the quicker section.
